FAQ

how do we get started?

Fill out my contact form or send me an email with the details of what you're looking for at hello@valdphotography.com. I'll reach out to set up a meet-and-greet call to learn more about your needs. When you're ready to move forward, I'll send you the digital contract and invoice to secure your photo timeslot (you pay a 25% deposit to hold the date). We'll have some back and forth to plan the session so we're prepared and then we'll have an amazing photo session to capture your vision.

what if I just need a few photos?

Currently my smallest branding session comes with 30 photos included. If you're looking for a smaller package, make sure you join my mailing list. I sometimes provide branding mini sessions that consist of smaller packages. Also you can always reach out - we may be able to set up a custom package for you depending on your needs.

I'm terrible with posing - will you help?

Absolutely! I always come to the session prepared with moodboard we've prepared together that includes some poses and scenes we want to capture. I will also provide guidance on posing and prompts for different photos. I will ask you to be a little adventurous during the shoot - for example, I may ask you to help me incorporate some movement for more natural photos or even to express some emotions. The key thing is to try to have fun and know that I will only send you the best photos we create together.

I also struggle being photographed and my best photoshoots have come when I just lean into the session despite the discomfort and try a lot of different angles, movements, and expressions. It can be really fun if you allow that experimentation and it leads to the best results, for sure. So it's going to be a collaborative process - we'll work together to get the best photos we can.

What should I wear to the session? Should I wear makeup?

This is a very common question, and I totally understand why! When I dress for my own branding sessions it can be a huge ordeal and quite stressful. For several of the brand packages you have the option for multiple outfits as well - sometimes that can be as simple as switching out a cardigan or blazer for a different colour or style and that can help with fast changes.

I do have several expert stylists I trust on call and I do recommend adding a stylist on to your session, either as just a pre-consult to the session and/or to have on hand during the session. They will help make sure you look amazing in every photo (posing, adjusting hair, clothing, steaming things, etc.).

But here are some general tips:

Your outfit should align with your brand and the message you want to convey:

  • Brand Colors: Incorporate your brand colors subtly. Avoid overwhelming patterns or graphics that distract from your face and the message.
  • Style: Choose outfits that reflect your brand’s personality. If it’s professional, go for clean and tailored looks. For a creative brand, try something bold or unique. If you want to convey a casual and relaxed style because that suits your brand best, that's also something to consider.
  • Comfort: Wear something you feel confident and comfortable in. It just makes everything so much easier during the photo session and will lead to better photos.
  • Accessories: Keep accessories minimal and on-brand to enhance your look without overpowering it.

Whether or not to wear makeup depends on your usual style and the image you want to project:

  • Natural look: If you don’t typically wear makeup, a light application to even out skin tone (like tinted moisturizer or powder) and a bit of mascara or lip balm can work wonders for photos. It can also go a long way to helping you feel more prepared and confident.
  • Full glam: If makeup is part of your brand identity, go for it! Make sure it’s well-blended and avoid heavy shimmer or glitter, as these can reflect light awkwardly.

The goal is for you to feel authentically yourself, while presenting the best version of you that aligns with your brand. Confidence is the most important thing you can wear!

What happens after the photo session?

After the session, I will select all of the best images we took together. I'll upload those to an online proofing gallery as watermarked JPEGs. I'll then ask you to select the final images you want edited. I'll then edit them and perform light re-touching as needed. Finally, I'll upload them to the gallery as high resolution digital files and send you the instructions on how to download them.

When do I get my photos?

You will receive the link to your proofing gallery within (1) week of the photo session date. After you select the final photos, the final images will be delivered within (2) weeks. If there is any unforeseen delay, I will make sure to let you know.

How would you describe your photography style? Can you change it if needed?

I consider my style to generally be:
  • clean
  • warm
  • bright
  • true to colour
  • very careful to colour correct to accurate skin tones (trying to avoid skin tones that are green or gray in tone)

However, every photoshoot can be different depending on the context and also depending on the mood and style needed for a particular brand. I am open to exploring different styles of editing if you prefer a different vibe for your particular brand photos. This is a truly collaborative process and I want to support your vision.

how do you handle retouching? How much do you retouch?

I'm careful with retouching. I will usually discuss this process with you during our planning call as every client has different preferences. Generally, I will remove prominent blemishes (not natural marks) and run a very light skin smoothing edit in Photoshop. As a general principle, I do not adjust body shapes (waist, stomach, legs, etc.).

What is a commercial usage license and why do I need one?

Unlike other photography just for personal use, brand photography is all for the purpose of sharing to SELL. A commercial use license is what grants you the freedom to share your photos for advertising purposes.

I include my commercial usage license in my brand packages just to make things easier for you. The details of the usage are in your contract that you sign at the start. The license I grant allows for online use (social media and your website) and printing for the sole use of the business (e.g., business cards or limited business-funded advertising) but does not authorize selling, sublicensing or distribution of photos to any third party. For example, if you were approach by a magazine for use of the photograph or wanted to use the licensed photos for advertising in a third party product, you would need to get in touch with me to purchase the right to distribute the photograph in those ways.

It's important to know that as the photographer I retain copyright of the images, which means you are not able to sell the images, claim the photos as your own, or list them on stock websites. Under Canadian copyright law, I also have moral rights to the work. This includes the right to the "integrity" of the work, meaning that you are not permitted to modify or manipulate the photographs (including applying filters, cropping, or colour correcting) without my permission. This will be detailed in the contract.

If you as the client want to own the copyright of the photos, that is something we can discuss as an option but does come with an additional fee and would require an additional contract where I would waive moral rights over the photographs.
